Studying Our Household

We’ve been home now for almost a week and we have a little bit of waiting to do before our next big round of traveling. So I thought that I could talk a little more about what Barbara and I have done to get to this point.

As I had said in our last adoption story post, we searched for an Agency that we felt would be best for us, and once we did, we signed up to begin the beautiful process.

The next step of the process was for us to find a local social organization that would perform a home study for us. Just as Barbara had done her research on Adoption Agencies, Barbara found a few local organizations that could help us out. Once we communicated with all of them, there was one of them that we felt would work best for us so we officially requested the Home Study to begin.

Home Study

Home study: A study of the prospective adoptive family and their home, life experiences, health, lifestyle, extended family, attitudes, support system, values, beliefs, and other factors relating to the prospective adoption, all of which is summarized in an adoption study or home study report.

As you can see stated above, a Home Study is not as simple as having someone walk into your house and make sure everything is ok. There are a lot of steps that must be taken to meet the requirements of a good Home Study review. Three interviews, Home walk through, __ hrs of training (which I highly recommend for all parents), and an Autobiography, to name a few. I know this sounds like a lot to do to adopt a child, but even with all of the things that we needed to fill out I feel that it was a very good way for Barbara and I to prep ourselves for our little girl.

Once we finished all of our documents, training, and interviews; our social worker started to put together our Home Study and we were one major step closer to Dagny.

  1. Wonderful information for others. You two have so much to tell. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that you hear real soon about the next step that you will need to take to get little Dagny home to NY!
Much love to the new parents to be.
